Fans of royal drama The Crown will know that it focuses around different historical events and their impact on the British Monarchy. One major plotline in the series so far has been the interaction between Queen Elizabeth II and the various prime ministers who have served under her rule. With the new season fast approaching, viewers are curious to know whether it will feature Margaret Thatcher.
Will Margaret Thatcher appear in The Crown season 3?
The news was confirmed on the official Twitter account of the hit drama.
Accompanying the announcement, Anderson released a statement about playing the prime minister.
She wrote: “I am so excited to be joining the cast and crew of The Crown and to have the opportunity to portray such a complicated and controversial woman.
“Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable but I am relishing exploring beneath the surface and, dare I say, falling in love with the icon who, whether loved or despised, defined an era.”
The Crown: Gillian Anderson will play Margaret Thatcher
Anderson is best known for her long running role as Dana Scully in The X-Files as well as appearing in Netflix show Sex Education and Jamie Dornan serial killer series The Fall.
But while the third series will be released later this year in November, viewers will not see Anderson as Thatcher until season four.
The fourth season is not expected until 2020 but it is currently in production.
Season three of the show is expected to cover the time period of the mid-1960s.
The Crown: Margaret Thatcher will appear in season 4
This was confirmed in an interview with showrunner Peter Morgan in Entertainment Weekly in which he revealed that some key events of the decade will be covered.
These include the 1964 reveal that the Queen’s art adviser Anthony Blunt was a Soviet spy as well as the breakdown of the marriage between Princess Margaret (Helen Bonham Carter) and Lord Snowdon (played by Ben Daniels).
But the announcement of Thatcher implies that the fourth outing may take place in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
As Thatcher became leader of the Conservative Party in 1975 and prime minister in 1979, this could be depicted in the series.
The Crown season 3: Olivia Colman plays The Queen
She was Britain’s first female prime minister and retained the position from 1979 to 1990.
Thatcher is well remembered as a controversial figure who was nicknamed the ‘Iron Lady’ thanks to her uncompromising leadership style.
This timeline is also implied by the casting announcement of Emma Corrin as Lady Diana Spencer, who will also appear in season four.
Diana came to prominence in the public eye after she became engaged to Prince Charles in 1981.
The Crown season 3: Josh O’Connor plays Prince Charles
Before fans see how the historical figures will be brought to life, the third series is expected on Netflix later this year.
In the new series Olivia Colman will play the Queen, taking over from Claire Foy in the first two seasons.
Alongside her, Helena Bonham Carter has replaced Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret and Tobias Menzies has taken over as Prince Philip from Matt Smith.
The new series will also feature grown-up incarnations of the Queen’s children Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor) and Princess Anne (Erin Doherty).
The Crown season 3 will be released on Netflix on November 17.
